The book starts with an introduction to software engineering and a definition of terms. Chapter 2 identifies what criteria can be applied to software products and how they can be measured. Chapter 3 describes the phases in system development; analysis, specification, design, implementation, test/installation and documentation/maintenance. Chapter 4 presents in detail the theoretical and practical aspects of OO system development. Chapter 5 overviews project management and 6 the SE tools available. Throughout, the book compares and contrasts various techniques (e.g. prototyping versus the waterfall life cycle model) discussing advantages and disadvantages. There are plenty of examples and exercises and the simulation of a portal robot is used as a large case study to support the text.
I found this a very interesting book on very important techniques in system development and implementation. Being written in highly technical language it is not an easy book to read (it has also been translated which probably does not help). This would be a good book for an undergraduate module on system design and implementation which is oriented towards OO and prototyping. Also a useful review book for system developers.
