This is done by presenting a number of separate mini-projects, each of which illustrates a particular C technique. The book concentrates on two subjects in particular, pointers and file I/O. These are subjects which seem to cause the most problems to newer C programmers.
Each of the eight chapters presents a separate little project and can be read separately. There is a lot of code, but it doesn't dominate the book. Zolman gives clear and educational explanations of the techniques used in each project. He explains not only how the various components work, but also how they interact in the whole.
The code presented is of a uniformly high quality, and can be taken as a good example to follow. I don't know that the book would have that much to offer to an experienced C programmer. It would, however, be a valuable addition to the library of the newer programmer who has learned the basics, has written a few small programs, and wants to learn some of the more advanced techniques. On that basis I can strongly recommend it.
There is, as usual, a code disk available. The bad news is that you have to send to the States for it. The good news is that this one is only $14.50 including postage. Perhaps things are improving.
