Book Review
One of the classic books on computing is 'The Mythical Man Month' (a
new edition has just been released - I'll tell you about it when I get my
hands on a copy) which, along side Knuth's first three volumes of 'The Art of
Computer Programming', has sustained the test of time. While I doubt that
this book will have quite the same durability, it is, none-the-less, a title
that I think all programmers as well as software users should read. As it
only makes demands on your thought processes it can easily be read while
standing in queues, having a bath or traveling on public transport. In other
words at all those times where other demands on your mind have to be put on
hold.
I started my section with a book on safety critical programming. Well this
is the one to read if you need any persuasion that you should read
Safer C .
A good antidote for the view of software as magic. I'll leave you with a
single quote from the epilogue:
The software had a bug that prevented them from processing refund-
anticipation loans promptly, and people got pretty steamed about it. A mob
threw a bottle through one accountant's office window; another was faced with
a .357 Magnum; a third received bomb threats. Tax preparation is less boring
with software.
