As you would expect from a student text, you need to work to get full benefit from reading it. You will also need to avoid the temptation to skip the exercises.
This book follows its publisher's policy of providing ftp support to students and instructors using it. There is also a supplementary 'Instructors Resource Manual' (ISBN 0 8053-1227-7).
If only more of our academic institutions would use books of this quality as bases for their courses we would have both students and instructors feeling more satisfied with their work. Definitely those responsible for academic courses in programming should be familiar with this book even if they elect not to use it.
For the rest, if you seriously want to learn to program you need to study books such as this one. Learning a programming language is necessary for program writing just as learning a natural language is a pre-requisite to any form of earning your living by writing.
There are many professional programmers who would profit from reading this book, if only they could find the time to do so (and in too many cases, the humility to admit that they still have much to learn).
