Daniel Appleman has written a book that definitely does not duplicate the manuals. He has realised how important the new object and ActiveX technology is for VB programmers and how radically it could change the way their software is constructed and has written a book to convey this vision. (ActiveX technology was formally referred to as OLE.)

Appleman is one of the most respected writers on Visual Basic and also runs a company producing innovative VB tools. He has obviously studied and thought deeply about his subject matter. The book is like a commentary on VB 5 and provides the back-ground information necessary to understand the technology. As such it's a rare book and is interesting, useful and highly enjoyable to read. I recommend it to anyone who is serious about Visual Basic programming.

The bundled CD contains a number of the articles that Appleman has published over the last few years (including one that I had been trying to get hold of), so for once it genuinely is a bonus (and one that other authors should think about emulating).
