A more recent acquisition was Ira Pohl's book, C++ for C programmers. This is similar to the Disk Tutor in its organisation, with each chapter bringing in new constructs and concepts within the language but assumes that the programmer is considerably more experienced. Indeed, this could be used as a reference. Pohl describes the language element at the start of each section, then provides a short program illustrating the use and finishing with a 'dissection' of the critical lines of the program. In this way, the reader is forced to attempt to understand the concept first but has access to a sort of 'crib sheet' to refer to if necessary. Each chapter ends with a summary of the language component and a series of exercises. This is not a book for someone new to C programming as the author refers back to C throughout the book, but for anyone else - highly recommended.
