Book Review
I do not think that it is possible to review a conference report.
Inevitably the style is uneven and the subject matter is only loosely
related. However let me remind you that OOPSLA (Object-Oriented Programming
Systems, Languages & Applications) is one of the largest conferences (2700
delegates last year) around. People do not pay large sums of money to attend
such events just to meet their friends (though that is certainly part of the
attraction of good conferences).
This book melds together everything from Christopher Alexander's historic
keynote (an Architect giving a keynote to a conference on the frontiers of
Programming technology must be a most unusual event) through technical
papers, panel discussions and reports of debates.
Nothing will substitute for being there, but at least this will give you a
sense of what those out in new territories are doing.
Well worth the cost.
